Korean Mobile Carriers to Introduce World’s First Commercial 5G Network on Saturday

Every new generation of wireless networks delivers faster speeds and more functionality to our smartphones. Currently, 4G is the mobile network that is used around the world to make calls, send messages and surf the web. Now there are plans for 4G to be replaced by 5G. A new, faster network that has the potential to transform the internet. 5G is a software defined network – it means that while it won’t replace cables entirely, it could replace the need for them by largely operating on the cloud instead. This means it will have a 100x better capacity than 4G – which will dramatically improve internet speeds.

World’s First Commercial 5G Network

We already know that network providers around the world are already gearing up to test 5G, South Korea is set to beat the United States of America and China to become the first country to rollout 5G technology. The three major telecommunications providers in Korea, SK Telecom, KT and LG Uplus will reportedly deploy the world’s first commercial fifth-gen telecoms services on Saturday by sending out the first 5G signals in Korea together.
SK Telecom plans to deploy 5G services in the Seoul metropolitan area as well as Korea’s six major cities while LG Uplus will set up 5G services in the Seoul metropolitan area and chosen major cities in Korea.

The mobile carriers of the Korea plans to set up over 7,000 5G network stations across the country by end of December.

For the December launch, the mobile carriers of South Korea plan to deliver 5G services first by using mobile routers — devices that enable connection to Wi-Fi devices. 5G services will be accessible for the smartphone users in March 2019.
