TikTok is a Chinese video app that enables users to create short videos with special effects. As it gained immense popularity among Indian youths, there have been concerns about the misuse of the app. Now, according to the new report, Madras High Court asks the center to ban the TikTok app, saying it was “encouraging pornography”.
Madras high court which has been hearing a PIL against the application has said that the children using the TikTok app were vulnerable to exposure to sexual predators. The court also said that “inappropriate” content was TikTok’s “dangerous aspect”.
Apart from asking the government to ban the TikTok application, the court said TikTok videos should not be broadcast by media. The IT ministry yet to respond to the request.
Furthermore, a division bench of Justice N Kirubakaran and Justice S S Sundar also issued a direction prohibiting media houses from telecasting videos made with TikTok. Adding on to the direction the court said, “The government has to answer whether the union of India will enact a statute, like the Children’s Online Privacy Protection Act, enacted by the United States of America to prevent children from becoming cyber victims.”
