Design

Oppo has finally done something that has foxed smartphone makers in recent times — make a phone without bezels. The Oppo Find X is made up of curved 3D glass in the front and back. On the front, the bezels around the screen are almost non-existent, which results in a screen/body ratio of 93.8%. At first glance, you are greeted with the gorgeous AMOLED display that is curved on the sides. Oppo likes to call this the ‘Panoramic Arc Screen’. It flawlessly merges with the back of the phone, which is made of Gorilla Glass 5, just like the front. The back panel is extremely glossy and it does feel quite premium to hold and use the phone. On the back Oppo logo and “Find X – Designed by Oppo” branding. On the left of the smartphone are the volume control buttons, and the lock/ power key is on the right. The USB Type-C port and SIM card tray, which supports two Nano SIM cards, are on the bottom.

‘Stealth’ Cameras

The back of the phone has a double camera unit with the LED flash. The device has a 16-megapixel + 20-megapixel camera at the rear, secondary sensor is used for portrait shots and 2X zoom. The front holds a 24-megapixel sensor. The lenses at the back have an aperture of f/2.0 along with OIS and phase-detection autofocus. There’s obviously AI in the camera. The back camera can perceive scenes and apply the pertinent camera settings, improve picture shots. It also features a portrait modes and Lighting modes include natural, rim, canvas, local, bi-color and face lighting. The front camera utilizes the 3D projector to apply 3D lighting impacts. The best thing about the camera is, just like iOS you can see pop out every time you launch the camera app.

3D Face Unlock

The front of the slider has a25-megapixel selfie camera and sensors for the O-Face 3D face recognition technology, which Oppo claims is similar to how Face ID works on the iPhone X. The 3D face unlock feature uses 15,000 dot projection and 3D light structuring to scan the user’s face. While there is a slight delay in unlocking the smartphone, but Oppo claims that it is 20 times safer when compared to fingerprint unlock. Moreover, the 3D camera is also used to apply 3D lighting effects and to create stickers based on your facial expressions.

No Notch

After the iPhone X launch, it becomes hard to find a new flagship smartphone without a notch. There are exceptions such as Samsung, for example, or OPPO’s new Find X. The Chinese company has decided to get rid of it, so the Oppo Find X features a high screen-to-body ratio display and a display that is virtually free of flutter and frames. The front camera for the selfie is there, but only comes to the scene when it’s necessary. The same applies to the sensor for facial recognition. A small slash on the top of the display performs as the earpiece while the proximity sensor is embedded under the panel.

Software and Performance

The phone runs on the custom ColorOS 5.0 based on the Android Oreo 8.1. The ColorOS is quite easy to use, features gesture navigation. There are several gestures to use it. It doesn’t look much decent in terms of UI but has some good features. We have not faced any lagging issues while playing games, even in multi-tasking.

Final Impressions

We can say, Oppo Find X is a feature-packed, premium smartphone with all the flagship features that the best smartphones around might have, but its price tag may be difficult to legitimize for the curiosity of pop-up cameras. Oppo Find X’s innovative design outlooks the device from the other flagships phones that launched this year with a notch.
